By Sherrice Benjamin Wade

Pain can leave us with feelings we struggle to name and questions we struggle to ask. We may carry grief, disappointment, regret, or memories that surface when life becomes quiet.

Writing gives us a place to begin putting those experiences into words. A journal can hold an unfinished thought, an honest prayer, a difficult question, or a small moment of gratitude.

Sometimes the first sentence is, “Today, this is what is on my heart.”

Begin Where You Are

Give yourself a few quiet moments, and let your words come at their own pace. You might write about something you miss, a feeling you have been carrying, or a need you are beginning to recognize.

These prompts can help you begin:

Today, I feel…

What I wish someone understood is…

What I need in this season is…

One way I can care for myself today is…

Some days, a few sentences may be enough. Let your writing reflect where you are.

Write With Compassion

As you revisit painful experiences, speak to yourself with care. Consider what you understood at the time, what you have learned since, and what you hope to choose moving forward.

You might write a letter to your younger self, acknowledging what she endured and offering the encouragement she needed.

Give her room to be human. Give yourself room to grow.

Make Space for Prayer

Faith is central to my writing and my belief that there is purpose beyond painful seasons. A written prayer can help us express what feels difficult to say aloud.

You might begin:

Father, help me understand what I am feeling. Give me wisdom about my next step, courage to ask for support, and grace for the parts of me that are still healing.

Allow your journal to hold your questions alongside your hope.

In Beauty From the Broken: Becoming Her, I bring together Scripture, prayer, and guided reflection to encourage women as they explore their stories and rediscover their worth.

As you write, listen for your own voice. Notice what needs attention. Honor the small steps you are taking.

Your story is still unfolding, and there is room on the page for the woman you are becoming.

CHAPTER 01· SELECTED SAMPLE

The Trauma of the Loss

Understanding What Happens When We Hurt

Scripture focus: Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Loss can leave us feeling as though life has suddenly moved beyond our control. The death of someone we love, the loss of a relationship, disappointment, rejection, or another painful experience can overwhelm us emotionally, physically, relationally, and spiritually. Healing does not mean pretending that the loss did not happen. Healing begins when we acknowledge what happened, recognize what it affected, and begin bringing those wounded places into the presence of God.

MY DECLARATION
My pain does not define my identity.
